Recently, at NIO Day 2024, NIO's third brand - NIO Firefly was officially launched. The Firefly brand logo features dancing fireflies, full of energy. NIO's chairman William Li stated that Firefly will provide users with a free-spirited mobility experience and a thoughtful, reliable living space, making every journey a moment to express oneself.
At first glance, Firefly seems very sincere and user-oriented, but is it really? Let's continue. At the launch event, besides the Firefly brand announcement, their first model - also named "Firefly" - was unveiled, but surprisingly, the appearance of this new car left people stunned.
From Firefly's design, it's clear that it's a hatchback. Officials claim its competitors are premium products like MINI and Smart, stating that Firefly will be "more MINI than Smart, and smarter than MINI. Smart is a bit too big, and today's MINI isn't smart enough - this is Firefly's competitive edge," according to William Li's bold statement. However, looking at the overall vehicle silhouette, it resembles a Xiali from over a decade ago and doesn't convey a particularly premium feel, especially considering that users place high importance on appearance.
If the overall shape hasn't already put you off the Firefly, that's just the "appetizer." The most controversial and deterring feature is its triple-ring headlights (both front and rear). What does it look like at first glance? Some say it resembles an iPhone's rear camera setup; I feel it looks like damaged holes on an Apple device. It looks strange from any angle - I wonder if others feel the same.
Officials don't see any issues with the appearance, claiming it isn't Firefly's selling point. For core features, Firefly uses high-strength steel and aluminum alloys accounting for 83.4% of materials, along with double impact beams in the front and front doors, and 9 airbags - making it quite competitive in the small car segment. Additionally, the new car boasts a class-leading 4.7-meter turning radius and full-scenario automatic parking functionality, promising users a good experience.
Regarding other highlights, Firefly features a 92L front trunk with layered storage and self-draining capabilities. The rear trunk can be extended by folding down the rear seats, increasing storage space up to 1250L. For power replenishment, Firefly supports charging, battery swapping, and upgrades, sharing NIO's charging network, greatly extending its travel range.
